Aluminum electrolysis cell is normally a rectangular cell lined with carbon block and other refractory materials. It is the main equipment for aluminum production.
During the operation, alumina is replenished periodically into the bath, where it is dissolved in molten mixture of cryolite (Na3AlF6), aluminum fluoride (AlF3) and other substance. Then it is molted at a temperature of around 950°C. This temperature is maintained via electrical resistance and heat released by chemical reaction.
The molten mixture is electrolyzed by passing low voltage direct current. Liquid aluminum is therefore deposited at cathode and, since it is denser than molten cryolite, sinks to the bottom of the cell, where it is periodically collected. Oxygen is produced at the anode and, combined with carbon at the anode, forms carbon dioxide.
Cathode needs to have good electrical conductivity and good resistance to the corrosion of molten cryolite, NaF and aluminum. Yanmu's carbon block series (FB1060) is recommended.
Sidewall of electrolysis cell undergoes corrosion of high-temperature molten cryolite, NaF and aluminum, erosion caused by the intensively agitated molten liquid, thermal shock and oxidation caused by infiltrating air. Under such wearing condition, Si3N4 bonded SiC brick (FB7160BN) would be an ideal choice.
At the bottom, between cathode and underlying insulation layer (UI8960C), an anti-infiltration layer formed by dry barrier mix (UR8960R) is high recommended to protect the insulation layer from infiltrating Na and NaF.
